Certification Preparation Program

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Structured Multiliteracy Certification Preparation Program
provides a comprehensive biliteracy approach to
reading which includes the cross-linguistic relationship in Spanish
and English as it relates to phonological awareness, phonics,
reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.
Participants learn the theories and evidenced-based practices for
literacy development, the specific characteristics of dyslexia, the
language and literacy structures of Spanish and English with a multi-
modality instructional approach that is explicit and systematic.
Screening across languages and how to interpret test results are
reviewed and practiced. Participants learn how to design lessons
that capitalize on heritage language and literacy skills to build upon
second language and literacy development. Text structure
knowledge is reinforced with the participants and professional ethics
are examined. Course graduates will be eligible to apply for The
Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI) Structured
Literacy Interventionist Certification OR The Academic
Language Therapy Association (ALTA) Certified Academic
Language Practitioner.
